UGANDA 2006 expedition - A selection of Pictures
Thirty Scouts spent nearly a month in Uganda over the summer break working and living with Ugandan Scouts.
CAN YOU MAKE A DIFFERENCE? – THESE SCOUTS DID!
After three fantastic weeks in Uganda and another 3 days in Kenya we can report that most objectives were achieved and expectations exceeded. Every one of the team that went had a great time and came home having had a trip of a lifetime.
The expedition itself was a great success, projects completed and safaris and sightseeing wonderful.
The real success was more profound and deeper than that; values have been changed, understanding of different cultures improved and friendships made.
The reward for the hard work on a building site in Tororo was seeing the roof put on the Scout headquarters that we started in 2003.
The thousands of trees funded were seen during the school visits where hundreds of children came and welcomed you. The school day was willingly interrupted and we were made to feel really welcome.
The protected springs dug and concreted gave 4 villages safe water on their doorstep. We received thanks through the grapevine from the people of the village. The reward was seeing the villagers able to collect clean drinking water without having to carry it for miles.
The result of 24 hours spent at a remote village on the bank of Lake Victoria was a fence around an open medical disposal pit and 400 books donated to the school that had none. The Headmaster openly wept with joy and couldn’t understand why his school had been chosen.
The warm welcome from the staff of the orphanage that we visited for a day to do odd jobs and play with the babies was overwhelming.
The poverty was evident everywhere but everyone was content with what they had, of course they wanted to improve but it did not affect their happiness! We have a lot to learn from their general happiness and acceptance of life.
A Street Kids project was initiated before we left Tororo, and sponsors are being sought for each of the children. The latest report is that all children have been offered boarding school places and they are now attending school.
Thanks go to everyone who has helped make this expedition of a lifetime a success.
