Report for the EPSOM BOOK FAIR 2007

We were delighted that the Epsom Charity Book Fair raised the fantastic total of over £14,000.  This was the 6th Annual Book Fair held at Epsom Methodist Church and the largest and most successful to date.  £14,000 represents a significant increase on last year’s total of £11,000.

Around 70 volunteers helped to sort around 100,000 books plus DVDs, videos and music, for the week leading up to the Fair which was held on Friday 16th and Saturday 17th February 2007.  People poured into the church over the two days we were open.  The weather was kind to us, which I’m sure encouraged people to attend.  They happily browsed and bought books, and also raffle tickets and delicious refreshments, which were available throughout.

The money raised will be donated to NCH, the children’s charity, and the church's development appeal to extend and improve the premises for a wide range of community uses.

We had more books than ever before and so everyone is delighted that once the building works (which have just begun) are over, we will have the luxury of much more space for our next Fair.

The Fair is a true community event.  It relies on support from members of the public who kindly donate books and is supported by people throughout Epsom and beyond, who come along to buy.  It crucially also relies on members and friends of EMC who generously give their time and labour – without their help the Fair could not be a success.  We are very grateful to everyone who helped.

Once everyone had recovered, we celebrated our success at a lunch on Sunday 4th March and made plans for next year.  Our usual February dates will not be possible in 2008 because of the building work, but, depending on the progress of the work, we plan to hold next year’s Fair in April, and for the first time for three days rather than just two - on Thursday 17th, Friday 18th and Saturday 19th April 2008.  Please note that these dates will not be confirmed until later this year.

As part of the World’s Greatest Coffee morning, the Douthwaite House Group hosted a delightful, even if a bit damp occasion at Beaumont, 84 Dorling Drive. Towards the end the sun arrived and many toured the garden and water features, the runner beans (Wisley Magic) sold like hot cakes on the bring and buy stall. And reports back indicate these were delicious!

Entrance was free this included refreshments, BUT many donations were received from the 70 folk who attended and also from those who could not make the day and the bring and buy stall was a great success

We raised £583-84, THANK YOU ALL

Epsom Charity Book Fair 2006

For the EMC Development Appeal and NCH.

Epsom Methodist Church was bursting at the seams this February when it was filled to the brim with at least 50,000 books!  The Fifth Annual Book Fair held on Friday 17th and Saturday 18th February 2006 raised a record £11,000 to be divided between the Development Appeal and NCH.  A huge range of high-quality second-hand books were available at bargain prices, from fiction to biography, text books and books for children, to art and history.  All kinds of music (LPs to CDs), audio tapes and videos (and DVDs) were also on sale.

Weeks of careful planning culminated in several days of transporting, sorting and pricing.  Many people came along to help before, during and (crucially) with the clearing up after the Fair.  A great team effort!  The organisers were delighted with the magnificent result.

We were delighted that The Mayor for Epsom & Ewell Borough Council Jean Smith and Consort (husband Dennis), with the Rev. David Winwood were able to attend.

Greatest Coffee Morning in Ewell

As part of the World’s Greatest Coffee morning an event was held on Friday 30 September 2005, at Beaumont, 84 Dorling Drive.

About 60+ visitors were able to explore the beautiful landscaped gardens, complete with ponds and waterfall, rustic bridge, water features, ornamental vegetable gardens and the unique Millennium Arch, although the weather was a little unsettled but at least mild.

Money raised for The Macmillan Cancer Relief fund in 2004, was £420, for 2005 we have established a new record of £510.

The old record has been topped so if you missed the coffee your donation can still be offered, but be quick. A new feature was the Bring and Buy stalls which raised £60 to the total.

There was no entrance fee or refreshment cost, but folk gave generously to The Macmillan Cancer Relief fund.

This event was organised as part of the EMC outreach by one of the EMC House Groups, they would like to say to all,

a GREAT BIG THANK YOU

Date for your 2006 diary, same time and place but the last Friday is the 29 th September, do not forget.

explanation about Indian Dancing - Bharatha Natyam

The word Bharatha is believed to be composed using the first syllable of each of its main elements.

Bhavam - Facial expression

Ragam - Melody

Thalam - Rhythm

Along with these fundamental principles the word Natyam, meaning dance, is added. Hence Bharatha Natyam is a dance form containing these three elements.

There are three basic types of dance:

Nirutham,

Niruthiyam

Natiyam.

Nirutham is pure dance, used to show technique and intricate timing and rhythms along with posture and footwork.

Niruthiyam comprises body movements along with facial expression. This has definite meaning and can be used to relay stories of varying lengths.

Natiyam is a mixture of dancing and acting. The dancer interprets the mood and emotions of a story a lot more thoroughly and conveys this to the audience through facial expressions.

Watch this space for the amount raised

£1397.20 at the fair and £2761.52 in the evening

making a total of £4158.72

Garden Party and Open House - Saturday 16th July 2005 - in aid of EMC DEVELOPMENT FUND

David and Wilma Winwood invited you to their - OPEN HOUSE & GARDEN PARTY

Barbecue: Cakes; Strawberry Teas Coffee: Ice cream: Cool Drinks

Puppet Show, well done Jill and her team: Live Music with thanks to Haywards Heath musician and of course David on the drums, not sure about the shorts but the standard white socks were in evidence so we will say pass.

If you missed this occasion it was well supported by EMC members and friends who enjoyed a beautiful sunny day with plenty to eat and drink in very nice surroundings and side stalls, although it was noted that by those who travelled further than the pond that Wilma's Christmas tree looked very sad and we believe it will not last to next Christmas!

We would like to say ‘thank you’ to all who were able to accept our invitation for an open house and garden party at the manse on 16th July.

It was beautifully sunny and loads of people came. We greatly appreciated your support and the thoroughly enjoyable day.

We were impressed by the willing work that made it all possible – because people were baking cakes and running a cake stall, preparing flan, strawberries and cream or raspberry meringues. Things appeared for the bring and buy and were being sold all day, all the arrangements and produce for the bar-b-que appeared, people were serving tea and coffee and washing up all day. There was a raffle, puppets and jazz music and time to enjoy the garden. Some were transporting tables, drums and people and a great deal of goodwill contributed to a lovely day.

Incidentally, it also raised £664 towards the development costs.

In gratitude for all the help.

David and Wilma

monday club

The Monday Club enjoyed a lovely afternoon outing on the afternoon of 4th July 2005 to Morden Hall Park where the Ranger showed us around and we ended with Cream Tea!

Visit to John Wesley’s Chapel & Westminster Central Hall

Chinese and English speaking congregations had a wonderful outing led by Revd David Winwood and Revd KK Yap to the Central Hall and Wesley’s Chapel on Saturday, the 18th June 2005.   Over forty of us had the pleasure of exploring the heritage of Methodism.

We were greeted and welcomed by the Manager of the Westminster Central Hall.  This remarkable architectural building stands across the road from Westminster Abbey and Houses of Parliament.  The Hall had been visited by many famous figures such as Mahatma Gandhi and Winston Churchill.  We have learned many historical events such as: the “one million guineas from one million Methodists” to raise fund; we read some of the donors’ names in the leather-bound volumes; we now know the very first General Assembly of the United Nations in 1946, to create the Security Council and the International Court of Justice was held at this building; the signing of the Anglican and Methodist Covenant in the presence of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in 2003 in this Hall.   Currently, Church Services continue in the Great Hall.  It has a magnificent organ with 4,731 pipes.  The Hall can accommodate 2,350 people.  Free public organ recitals are held on the first Sunday of the summer months at 4.15pm.

After lunch, we enjoyed the surrounding space, shared our conversations in a relaxed atmosphere.

In the afternoon, we visited Wesley Chapel which was built in 1778, just outside the city of London.  This is the first Methodist Church built specifically for the celebration of Holy Communion as well as for preaching services.   We had a guided tour to the Museum, the Chapel, Wesley House and the court yard.  We could feel the atmosphere inside where John Wesley, the founder of Methodism lived, died and buried.

It was interesting to visit the Georgian town house and saw the facilities for preachers, their families and servants.  The belongings of John Wesley were on display such as furniture, electrical machines, his study chair and small prayer room.  No doubt, the recognition of energy and power were generated in John’s small prayer room.

We left with a feeling of God’s grace upon us and the need for us to grow in love towards God’s grace for all His people.  The four Methodist principals resonate in us are: Good News for all; Holiness for all; Assurance for all and Concerns for all.  We ended our tour with an opportunity to sing a Wesley hymn ‘Love Divine’ in the Chapel, accompanied by Ron Perkins who played Charles Wesley’s own organ.

This outing was a success and we had a photo (below) taken under the statue of our Founder, John Wesley.  On his memorial, we read ‘THE WORLD IS MY PARISH’.

Farewell Lunch for Alan, Carol, James & Kate Bradley

This was held on Sunday 24th July 2005, at Epsom Methodist Church

As you may be aware my 5 year appointment at EMC is up this summer and so Carol and myself have been engaged in the stationing process in order to find our next appointment.

In December 2004 we were invited to visit the South West Tyneside Circuit in the Newcastle District; to consider taking on pastoral charge of two churches: Rowlands Gill, a large church made up of all ages and at the heart of a commuter village; and Chopwell, a smaller church in an ex-mining village with new premises.

We both felt this was the right appointment for our family and my ministry and will therefore be leaving Epsom in the summer and heading North to make a new home in Rowlands Gill.  May we take this opportunity to thank all those who have supported us in prayer during this process.

With every blessing

THE 2005 BOOK FAIR - A GREAT TEAM EFFORT

18/19 February 2005

Many, many thanks to all the people who: delivered thousands (around 24,000!) of flyers through letterboxes, took flyers to shops, libraries, notice-boards, etc, received phone calls from donors and passed messages to collectors, collected books from donors, collected empty fruit boxes from supermarkets to store and transport books, talked enthusiastically about the sale to all and sundry, lent temporary storage space, sorted books etc in advance of the sale, shifted boxes of books from storage places to EMC, took junk books to recycling bins, sorted and sorted and priced books in the hall, received books with smiles and kept us going with coffee/tea and biscuits, controlled the entrance point and tills and the various stalls, brought family and friends to help, remained cheerful despite tiredness, provided the excellent refreshments for helpers and buyers/browsers, counted the money, cleared the hall on Saturday with amazing speed, worked on and filled a large articulated lorry with the surplus  for sale to a dealer or just helped in many other ways.

These are a few photographs of the massive collection of books for sale and the Mayor of Epsom & Ewell, Brian Angus who visited the Fair on Friday morning, with Rev. David Winwood the EMC Ministry team leader.

The response to the Book Fair has been terrific, thank YOU all, it has been estimated that there were 42,000 books given for the Fair and approaching 4,000 records, videos, CDs etc.

Have we beaten last year’s total of just over £6,000?

With the GRAND SUM of

Wait for it           the sum of £2000, NO        more? yes             perhaps £6,000, NO              it was a GREAT TOTAL of £9,000 so well done all of YOU        yes £9,000

We have raised (so far) over £9,000 to be divided (after deducting expenses) between the Development Appeal and NCH.

4-7-11 GANG SHOW

The 4-7-11 Gang Show 2005 – exciting entertainment for February 2005 has taken place at the The Epsom Playhouse.

With sketches and songs from “Fame”, “Peter Pan”, “Jungle Book”, “Lion King” through to

“Relight my Fire”, “Mambo No. 5” and, of course, songs by Ralph Reader, CBE.

Our very talented cast of Cubs, Brownies, Scouts, Guides & Explorer Scouts based at Epsom Methodist Church,

have been busy rehearsing since September 2004 and the Gang Show 2005 has been another

wonderful Show for all the family and all ages to enjoy.

The 4-7-11 Gang Show 2005 took place at The Epsom Playhouse on  1, 18, 19 February 2005

Fabulous, fantastic, wonderful entertainment, like a West End Show!

These are just some of the comments overheard after each performance of the 30th Anniversary Epsom Gang Show. Some people even came more than once- they enjoyed it so much!

Despite the choreography this year being more advanced and ambitious, the dancers excelled themselves to perform energetic and sophisticated routines like Rain and Schools Out.

Innovative and original numbers evoked huge applause e.g. Valentine, Toy Shop and the unforgettable Drumbone item.

There were tears after the moving Freedom while the sketches of King Arthur, Vet and Friend of the Family caused tears of laughter!

The creative, colourful costumes were simple yet produced a stunning effect especially in Safari and Thanksgiving, and the opening and finale were awash with red Gang Show T- shirts.

Probably many are still singing the catchy Asda theme or are feeling nostalgic at the Memories number.

The younger cast were delightful in Peter Pan and Harvest Time, with beautiful stage sets and costumes.

The youthful enthusiasm and willingness to perform was highlighted in the amazing Fire number with its creative concept of using the cast themselves as special effects

           Fire and fireworks.

The circus skills in Carnival showcased great talent- juggling, skating, stilt walking, clowning and unicycling.

In fact tremendous talent sums up the whole show- in the singing, dancing and acting from the cast- to the design of the stage sets and props, through to the production of the numbers and all the other tasks required to stage such a success.

Well done everybody involved- MORE! MORE!

A Word from the Show Director 2005

Work on this show started nearly two years ago, just after our last show. The production team evolved and changed. We lost some ‘old faces’ and new members were welcomed ‘on board’ as the planning progressed. The show evolved, sometimes a painful experience, but I believe that we had a balanced show as the rehearsals started.

If I’m wrong, blame me; if I’m right congratulate the production team and, especially, the cast who made it so! Then came the youngsters! They started as a number of individuals and small groups of friends and have, over the weeks, become a ‘gang’, working and having fun together. Helping each other and putting ideas forward.

Without them we would not have had a show! Anyone who belongs to the Epsom Methodist Scouts or Guides can be in the show. All we ask is for them to ‘do their best’. Something that every scout and guide promises to do when they are enrolled or invested.

It has been a great Gang to work with, both the youngsters and all the adults involved (too many to mention by name).

We’ve had our problems and our differences over the last year but working together all have been overcome to the benefit of the show.

I am very proud of what has been achieved by the Gang both on stage and behind the scenes.

I am very grateful to all those who have helped in oh so many ways, families, friends, businesses.

The Gang Show is a real team effort and every member is important.

I hope that you enjoy the show half as much as I have enjoyed being part of it.

Thank you for coming and we look forward to seeing you in 2007 when we will also be celebrating the centenary of Scouting and 80 years of 7th Epsom Scouts

Neil Dallen

Message from the Leaders

We hope that you have enjoyed this Gang Show.

It is a marvellous example of how young people can be involved in something worthwhile, something entertaining, and something which builds team spirit and which is very rewarding for both participants and audience alike.

We would like to think that even more youngsters could benefit from such an experience.

Scouting and Guiding has many opportunities to offer children from all walks of life – there is bound to be something for everyone, e.g. water activities, sailing, climbing, archery, cooking, camping etc.

In order to achieve our goal of never having to turn anyone away/we really do need to recruit more leaders.

Those who already give their time and support are drawn from those with ‘9-5’ jobs, those on shift work, the skilled, the semi-skilled and the un-skilled, the self-employed, the unemployed and the retired.

If you are not already involved with another voluntary organisation, please discuss how YOU can take part in this vital task, with any of our Leaders by e-mail.

RED SCARF DAY FOR EPSOM GANG SHOW!

Last week the cast and producers of the 4-7-11 Epsom Gang Show were awarded the coveted and prestigious red neckerchief scarves and logo shown left to celebrate that their recent show at Epsom Playhouse was so excellent it has won National Scout Show Recognition.

The creator of Gang Shows, Ralph Reader, introduced the red scarf scheme as a way of ensuring professional standards.

The photo shows Nigel Bird, District Scout Commissioner presenting the certificates to Neil Dallen (right) the present Director. Also pictured (left) is Norman Dallen the original director who started the Gang Shows in 1975.

They said, “We are absolutely delighted that all the talent and hard work by the cast, producers and stage crew and business team has been officially recognised. We will wear our scarves with pride, as it is a great honour. Thanks to all who helped us achieve this.”

Plans for the next show in 2007 will begin again soon- if you would like to help in anyway or are interested in Scouting and Guiding in Epsom, please contact by e-mail ………….click here.

Lent House Group 2005

Ecumenical House groups for the Epsom Churches during Lent 2005 have been completed.

The groups have been  organised by Churches Together in Epsom and the course material has been prepared by Canon Adrian Esdaile of St Martin’s Church, giving the discussions a focus on the life and work and mission of the Church in Epsom.

About 150 folk from the many places of Christian worship have attended these Lenten House Groups.

There was a feedback session at

Christ Church Epsom on Sunday 3 April

The title of the course was Living the Kingdom in Epsom.

Report

150 people, drawn from 10 local Churches, took part in 13 House Groups in Epsom in Lent 2005.

On Sunday, 3rd April, the Groups reported back their findings at a Service organised at Christ Church Epsom.

The proposals included ideas for worship together, either on a regular basis or on special occasions, either in the open air or in Churches or halls.

It was clear that a number of the groups commented on the lack of communication among the Churches of Epsom and proposed ways in which this difficulty could be overcome.

The general point was made that Churches Together worked best when it was faced with a definite project to undertake. A variety of such projects were suggested for consideration.

Several of the groups pointed towards the way in which all Christian work should be based in prayer and Bible Study. These suggestions too will be taken further when Churches Together meets in due course.

AUTUMN FESTIVAL

SATURDAY 16 OCTOBER 2004 - A short Report

This event was in place of the usual Spring Festival and was in two parts, late morning and early afternoon was a galaxy of stalls and side events. These were well supported and run by nearly all the groups within the Church fellowship and uniformed organisations.

In the evening was a well attended supper with the choice of English or Chinese food, well done the catering teams. This was interspersed with various entertainment from individuals and the Chinese choirs and their youth band. Many of these items were sponsored and perhaps the star of the evening was Rev. David Winwood (left) who excelled on a variety of different drums, "Make a loud noise to the Lord?"

The whole day was a team effort where the fellowship worked hard together, even the car park responded like a sardine tin! The final sum raised for the Church re-development is over £3,700, Praise be the Lord.
