Annual
Church Meeting – Tues 11th May 2010 (a
brief synopsis)
Even the
formation of a new, history making, government couldn’t deter the 60 odd
brave souls who attended the Annual Church Meeting 2010. Sitting in
sweaters and coats to ward off the spring chill it was David Winwood’s
last Annual Church meeting with us and David opened the meeting with
devotions which included a splendid rendition of ‘ In the name of Jesus’
by all (was it me or did this sound brilliant without the organ or
piano?).
Harvey
Morris speaking in his Leadership Team report gave tribute to David for
his work with us over the past years. I won’t dwell on this at this
moment as there is ample opportunity for all to give their thanks and
best wishes on 17th and 18th July. Harvey
appraised the meeting of the significant events over the past year.
One task
the AGM encompasses is the election of officials to the Church Council
and the Leadership Team. For the Leadership Team, John Riley was
proposed and the meeting unanimously endorsed John’s appointment to the
Leadership Team. Congratulations John and welcome.
There are a
number of vacancies that can be filled (there are up to 5 places) on the
Church Council. The meeting endorsed two proposals, Anne Arthur and
Andrew Jennings. Again, welcome to you both – your first meeting is on
June 10th 2010 The role of the Church Council is to act as
trustees for the Church, managing and ensuring that it’s affairs are
conducted appropriately. If you feel that you can contribute to the life
of the Church in this way please contact either myself or any of the
Leadership Team.
The biggest
debate and discussion for the evening focussed around the Youth Hall
development project. Ian Hay (see below), representing the Development team, briefed
the meeting on the current state of play both in terms of design which
is almost complete and the thorny legal issues that have presented
themselves by the need to ascribe to Charity Law. There was a huge
amount of frustration expressed by a number of attendees as to the
seeming lack of progress although it is equally frustrating for the
Development team. Hopefully, I will be writing project completion notes
at next years Annual Church Meeting!

Youth Hall
The projected financial position is secure and has been for some time.
The final design and tender documents have been completed and are ready
for printing when the go ahead is given. Preparatory work involving the
rerouting of pipe work in the Church Hall has been completed recently
and quotations have been invited for the removal of asbestos in the
Church Hall boiler room.
Consultations are on-going between the Methodist Church and the Scout
Association to formalise the relationship between the Church and the
Scouts for the use of the Hall. The Youth Hall Development Group is
being advised by Ted Totman, a retired lawyer and a member of St
Joseph’s Church. Ted has been in dialogue with the legal department in
Manchester and has outlined the favoured option of a licence agreement
(a licence rather than a lease because the use of the Hall is shared
between the Scouts and the Church).
Manchester
have not so far registered any objection in principle and Ted intends to
prepare a draft of the agreement which will eventually be used by
solicitors representing the Church and the Scouts independently. No
problems are anticipated on the Scouts side but this has yet to be
confirmed in writing.
