The
Methodist Youth Brass Band was formed in April 1987 when 20
enthusiastic young brass players responded to an advert in the
Methodist Recorder and got together at Surbiton Hill Methodist
Church. After just two lengthy and concentrated rehearsals they gave
a creditable first concert and then on the Sunday participated in
morning worship by playing the voluntaries and accompanying all the
hymns. The National Methodist Youth Brass Band had been born. It was
evident from that first weekend that there was potential and promise
for such a band and that God's Spirit was urging it on.
But
how can you run a band on a national basis? How can they get
together to practise and perform? What about the cost of travel and
accommodation? The answer is 'weekends'. The band meets four or five
times a year from Friday evening to Sunday afternoon. The players
sleep on the floor in church halls and are fed by local
congregations. They give a Saturday night concert and lead Sunday
morning worship - a pattern set by that first weekend in Surbiton.
I was a Chaplain to the band until I
was unwell last year, when I had to give up, but the band still
promised to come and do a concert for us once we are in our new
premises. When they’ve come to previous churches, when I was in St
Anne’s, and at Hayward’s Heath, the churches were packed for
concerts. They will arrive Friday evening, stay in the church for
the weekend and be hosted by us, and rehearse on Saturday morning,
present the concert in the evening, and on Sunday they will not only
lead the music for worship, but participate in the service as well.
A weekend not to be missed!

continuing unjust imprisonment and persecution.

Epsom 2008 Book Fair

Annual Giant Charity Sale of Second-hand Books, DVDs
and Music
(including CDs and LPs)
At Epsom
Methodist Church, Ashley Road
Bigger Building Boosts 2008 Book Sales!
Our seventh annual Charity Book Fair took place from 17th
to 19th April 2008. The Fair, which normally takes place in
February, was one of the first events to take place at the church following
the completion of our major rebuilding project. The attractive new
facilities and spacious surroundings undoubtedly contributed to the success
of the Fair, which exceeded all expectations in raising almost
£18,000
For the first time the Fair took place over three days, rather than
just two, giving the many hundreds of customers much more opportunity to
browse and buy, and allowing visitors an early opportunity to see inside the
new building.
Delicious lunches and cakes were served
throughout in the Book Fair Café.
Following generous donations of around 100,000 books, plus records,
videos, CDs and DVDs, a large team of volunteers worked together for over a
week to set up the Fair. We received many compliments on the quality and
range of our stock and about how well-organised everything was. Everyone
involved was delighted at the sums raised for NCH and the Church Development
Appeal (the next stage of which is a much-needed new youth hall to house our
thriving scout group, 7th Epsom, one of the largest in the
country). Perhaps the biggest problem we faced was to find sufficient
tables to display the goods! Acquiring some extra trestle tables is a
priority before next year’s Fair, planned for February 2009.
