A short report by Marina Woolgar

“Build For Life”

Was the theme for this year at SWAP- “Summer Worship and Praise” the Epsom Methodist Church.

Newly named SWAP, but following the same format as in previous years, the Epsom Methodist Church activity week took place week commencing Monday 22nd August 2005. After months of preparation and meetings, a team of about 70 willing helpers and over a hundred young people met each morning for a week of worship, fun, games, singing, crafts and drama.

All the activities this year reflected learning about how God created the world and how best we can build our lives with God.

Each day we explored a story from the Bible with a “building theme” –

God the builder- the story of the creation-

“God is a loving God who made a wonderful world for us”.

Noah building the Ark- building to save the world-

“Trust God and Save the World”.

Solomon building the temple- building as best you can for the glory of God-

                           “Always do it for God”.

The parable of the man who built his house on rock- building on good foundations-

                   “Build your life on Jesus”

Building the Church, the Body of Christ with our different gifts- we all have different strengths and skills and

“Everyone is a builder for God”.

With the use of “bricks”, sand, boxes, spades and ladders we managed to link this all to a physical demonstration of “building”.

As usual the children were divided into age groups

Red Group                   5-6 years

Yellow Group             6-7

Blue Group                  8-9

Green Group               9-10

Black Group                l0-14

Each group was led by their group leaders and helpers.

Each morning we met at 10.am in the church where the

‘Man with the Plans’ (David Winwood)

And his

Site Forman Lynn Mee

And other builders,

Jane Barden,

Gillian Mead and

Jacqui Raggett

Led us in the worship, drama and building activities.

The children then split into their individual groups with their leaders for either craft or physical activities. This was followed by a much needed break for food and drink provided by a wonderful and hard-working team of excellent ‘chefs’ in the kitchen and then back to more activities before meeting in Church at 12.00 midday for the final act of worship.

The Black group met up with us for worship but followed their own programme for the rest of the morning- still exploring the building theme.

On Wednesday the Black group had their traditional day out – this year at the sea-side in West Wittering in Sussex building sand castles and eating ice-cream in torrential rain and gale force winds!

Yes, SWAP is already being talked about for 2006
